UltrAspire Pack Review from iRunFar!

The Hoogster (Paul) just recently steered me over to view a new pack coming out by UltrAspire. Today I see there is a quick review by iRunFar here on their model "Surge".

It has me really intrigued but I do see a few small details that I am not sure I would like.

Pros:
Lots of front pockets

I like the idea of the cool webbing suspension that creates compression to the back of the pack. This would tone down pack wobble and also keep all your gear from shifting around.

I really like the pockets in the front and how they are super stretchy. One complaint I have about my current pack is that the pockets are relatively small and can't fit my arm warmers or gloves in them. Every time I have to shed layers or put some on I have to take off my pack or ask a fellow runner to get them for me.

I like the magnetic pill pocket. Snazzy.

I like the back top stretchy mesh pocket for headlamp or whatever.

It seems like a great size, perfect weight, and nice wide straps for running for long periods of time.

Did I mention I like pockets?

Cons:
Don't think I would be a fan of the metal clip system they use for the front chest straps. I have used these clips before, though they were smaller, and found them to be a bit of a pain and not "fast". I am kind of partial to the quick plastic buckles. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

The biggest complaint: I dislike that there isn't a separate sleeve or compartment for the hydration bladder. I sometimes throw my spikes into my pack, I would NOT like them to be up against my bladder. Plus I think having a sleeve to put the bladder into prevents the bladder from moving/bouncing around and if you have to take it out to refill it, trying to navigate around anything else you have in your pack while you shove your bladder hastily back into your pack could be a real hassle. If I were to buy this pack I think I would have to get creative and attempt to turn the pack inside out to sew a sleeve inside, or make a sleeve that quick attaches to the clip inside.

Other than that I think I like the pack and would LOVE to get one to try out. The fact that it is a few ounces lighter than my current pack with mostly the same, or improved, functions is a bonus. Will have to keep my eye out for any further reviews. I am also interested in looking at the Omega, albeit its slightly larger size.

Nice, but I agree - the bladder needs a separate pocket/sleeve. The reason this is important is if the bladder leaks anyways - maybe a hole, maybe the lids not sealed right. So the pocket for the bladder needs to have a slot in the bottom so that fluid drains out readily, without soaking the contents of your gear pouch.

JeffO- I agree. I am surprised that a bladder sleeve was overlooked as it doesn't really add significant weight and is quite essential in my opinion.

Just wanted to let you guys know the separate pocket wasn't over looked. This was done on purpose. Our elite immortal team suggested this for quick and easy access at aid stations. The intent of the pack is to move you through aid stations efficiently. There is an elastic cord inside to allow you to have the bladder held if you choose. If you will prefer to carry the bladder separate from your gear we offer the Omega. Hope you guys get a chance to check out the pack.
Sincerely UltrAspire Headquarters.
